Davia Garth, 12, was killed Thursday night, and Cleveland police tell Fox 8 the girl’s step-father, Rufus Gray, is the suspect. Cleveland police said the incident started as a domestic dispute. The girl’s mother, Sonya Gray-Garth, was also wounded in the stomach. Gray-Garth, who is out of the hospital, attended the Clement Avenue vigil. She tells Fox 8 she just wants her little girl back, and this tragedy doesn’t seem real. “I never thought I’d see this happen to me, I see it on TV, happening to other families, and my heart breaks,” Gray-Garth said. “God I’m going to miss her, I don’t even know how to eat, because when we ate, we ate together, we slept together, we played together,” the mother went on. Phillip Thomas was also at the vigil, Sunday. He is Davia’s brother, and tells Fox 8 he stepped in and tried to help after the shootings Thursday. He is grieving. “I’ve got my family around, it will get you through everything, we lost someone real important to us,” Thomas said. People in the neighborhood placed dozens of balloons and stuffed animals near a tree on Clement Avenue, all in Davia’s name. Gray-Garth tells Fox 8, she doesn’t know how to go on. “Sometimes I think it’s something that I could have prevented it, if I had taken him back would my baby have been here? Sunday’s group said this family was victimized, and sent the message that domestic violence needs to stop. Rufus Gray is behind bars on a $5 million bond.
